Why Chrome splits large Drive folders into ZIP parts

In the browser, “Download” on a Google Drive folder usually means: Drive packages the tree as a ZIP, then Chrome downloads that ZIP. For small folders this is fine. For large ones — hundreds of gigabytes of footage, photo takes, or project archives — the ZIP is too big to arrive as a single tidy file.

Chrome then receives the transfer as several sequential archives with names like drive-download-20260721T181813Z-1-013.zip. Each part is capped. You wait for one ZIP, then the next, then the next. Speeds often sit around typical browser download rates while the queue crawls. When it finally finishes, you still have to unpack and reassemble the pile before you have a usable folder on disk.
